Blog 45 - Monday, April 1, 2019

There will only be ONE blog this week.

The Board of Directors of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL) has recently made the decision to discontinue operations as of May 1, 2019. The league is being shut down due to lack of funding.

Do you believe it is important to have a Women's hockey league in Canada?
What could be done to save the league?
Do you think that funding should be split evenly between men and women sports teams?
Explain.

  1. I believe that it is important to have a women's hockey league in Canada only if people show interest. I mean, the reason the NHL thrives is because it has a good marketing base, a rich history and a big fan base. So, they get a lot of funding. However, if people show no enthusiasm for Women's hockey, then no organisation will want to support the league. They need the funding to thrive.
Maybe this is not as big as a deal as we think. I mean, yeah it might be important, but what's the point of having it if no one shows an interest. Maybe this is a good sign. Had the league continued, we would just be wasting our funding and no one would care. So, maybe we are doing more good by discontinuing it.

    1. I understand your point, and it is valid, but I disagree. It's more than just ending a league, it's almost the end of an unseen era. Probably not the best way for me to put it, but I couldn't think of anything else. Good blog though.

    2. I completely agree that we should only found something that people are interested in. Great blog.

  2. I heard about this right after I lost regionals. Its a hard pill to swallow for me, because they almost got me into hockey, which I love dearly. Seeing women play professionally was really inspiring to me, so I decided to play when I was just finishing the 6th grade. I am new to hockey in comparison to most of my team, but I still love it. To me the CWHL was super important and I attended some of their games. I actually just watched their game against the Calgary Inferno for the Clarkson Cup. 5-2 loss for Les Canadiennes, but they played really well. One of the games was at my home arena and I was on the news two years ago, It was really cool. I was given a card and got to talk to players on "Les Canadiennes" and get signatures. I met the entire team (at the time, players have since changed) and I have to say it was one of the coolest days of my life, I got to meet the people who had brought me into hockey, which I am insanely grateful for. I know I won't go into professional hockey because I'm not good enough and it's just not cut out for me, but I was inspired and I'm extremely sad to see this league go. I only hope another one will arise so that other young girls and women can be inspired to play this wonderful sport.
Women deserve sports leagues, salaries and all the things that men get, there is no reason why women shouldn't get them too. It is really sad for me to see the league go because of how much it meant to me and I think people should appreciate women's hockey more, let it have more recognition in a way. I think that would defiantly have helped save the league, awareness.
All in all, the CWHL was amazing and it inspired me to start something that I love so much and I will definitely miss it. Never forget.

    1. I agree that women deserve sport teams, however, you have to admit that if the teams are not properly organized, they cannot properly function. Maybe had the organization been run properly in a way that they receive funding and they commercialize on their success, they would not have to close down. Good blog, however.

    2. I completly agree! Its unfair that the player in the NHL are payed millions of dollars while in the womens league they aren’t even payed at all! Great blog!

  3. Personally I think that no sports teams are vital however if you have a men’s league then you should have a women’s one as well OR allow women who are good enough to compete in the men’s hockey teams. As for what could’ve been done to save the league? Many things for one the copious amount of money (which is much to high for someone hitting a piece of rubber around on ice) made by the men and the legues and arena in general could’ve gone to advertising to the women’s league. Finally I do believe that some of the money made by the men should go towards the women because even if I think a free market is important they still make waaay too much money. While the women make next to nothing and can never make more no matter how good they are. On top of that i think that all hockey players men and women should make the salary of your average accountant or at most for the really good ones a doctors salary. Because all these millions could be going to people who risk their lives being medics or policemen or even military personal. I know this is unpopular opinion but I think that entertainers in general such as singers should not make more money then the person risking their life and dying to keep other people safe.

  4. I think that it could be good to have a woman's hockey league because it reinforces the idea that men and woman are equal. I can think of 2 ways we could help save this league. A company could either invest money into this league or more people could watch it. I think that founding should not be equal because there are a lot more people that watch the men's teams play than the woman's. I did not say this to offend.

  5. I don't watch hockey at all(women and men) but I personally think having a women's league is important, but not likely. I say this because there is a reason they are shutting down the league, there are just to little people watching. One way I think this league could stay alive is by merging with the US league. One thing people are saying is that the funding should be the same as the NHL, this is so far off. The NHL has the far superior talent and even them ( compared to the NBA, NFL and MLB) aren't paying their players that much.

  6. Personally I do think it's important to have a women's hockey league as well as a men's one. Even though funding for this is very low and there isn't enough money to keep it going, I think that the funding should be equal between the men and women's hockey league. It demonstrates that women are equal to men and I think that women should have the same chance to play hockey. I'm not going to lie, more people do watch men's teams but I don't think that that should come to the conclusion of shutting down the women's league. Having a place where women can play on a more competitive level is very important and I don't think that it's right to have the CWHL shut down.

    1. Good blog I respect your opinions. But why would a part of the NHL’s revenue go to a league that’s doing worse then them (funding wise) when The NHL has been in trouble in the past years. That’s just my opinion and I fully respect equality through sports but these organizations have no correlation between each other.

  7. i don't think that the funds should be split equally, clearly there is a lack of interest in the women hockey, so why would be basically lose money, we know that it wont do as good as men hockey so why waste money and time.

  8. I think it is important to have women’s hockey in Canada. I think it will encourage the younger women trying to reach their goal in the future. This is a bump in the road for them. What could be done to help this is actually joining leagues with the US women’s hockey league just like the NHL is today. Not in a million years do I think men’s hockey should split any budget for anything. They are their own leagues and organizations.

  9. I think it would be cool to have an all women hockey team because GIRL POWER AM I RIGHT. But if we are being honest it just doesn't make sense. I think they are making the right decision to stop this league. I don't think money should be distributed between the two gender teams evenly because nobody watches the womens hockey and everyone always watches men's hockey. It's like giving the same amount of money to a school with 1500 students and a school with 18 students. It's not that the 18 students aren't important it's just that it doesn't make sense to keep their funding going.

    1. I agree. It would be great to have a women's team however the men's league will always be more popular. I love your example with the school funding... Great Blog!

  10. I think it’s important to have a pro team for girls to aspire to reach however if they aren’t mskinh funding standards for example not enough people are going to games or watching on tv I don’t see a point in them keeping the team around and I think splitting the funding sound fair but in reality it’s kinda wrong to be taking the proceeds earned by one league and giving them to another

  11. I think it's important for both genders to have equal rights because back in the days, men were considered superior because of their strengths on doing harder tasks. I think having a Women's Hockey League anywhere, because it inspires women to try out for harder sports not just considering men do most of all sports. We could try and raise awareness but I don't know anyone who watches the WHL.

  12. It's sad to think that all the little girls that have dreamed about one day becoming professional hockey player will no longer have that opportunity here and Canada. I also feel for those who have been working towards this dream for years just to here that the league is officially cancelled. Many people will fight say that the funding for both leagues should be split but at the same time won't make an effort to even watch the Women's league. I feel like it would be nice to have a Women's team but I also don't feel it's right to take the proceeds from the Men's league. However maybe The Canadian Women's Hockey League will make a comeback in the years to come. Let's just cross our fingers.

  13. I didn’t even know that the CWHL even existed until I heard it was being shut down. Though it is really sad. It is unfair that the the men are being payed millions of dollars while the women who want to play don’t even get to. There was nothing we could have done for them though other than goving copoous amounts of money but I don’t know if our government is in a position to do such a thing. Also Why don’t we just let the women that sre good enough play with the men? Just a thought.

    1. They had one women play in the NHL. The problem is it’s a lot more physical and the men are usually naturally faster and bigger so it’s unfair.

  14. I do think it’s sad that they have to shut it down but it’s an easy business choice. The CWHL wasn’t making money, so they shut down. The only way to save the league would be to get more viewers. They shouldn’t split funding, because the NHL makes thousands of times more. The NHL would lose a lot of money, and the women’s league would use the money, but then won’t have a way to make it back. Yes, it is sad but it’s a simple business idea.

  15. I believe that anything to support women sports is something worth fighting for as it is a subject that discriminates to women. So to answer the first question, yes, I do think that we should have a women's hockey team. I equally think that having fund raisers is probably the best to go to support it. Maybe make advertisements to get the word around more and grow more supporters. I do think that if things aren't going at all well for the women's hockey team, we should split the funding between men and women organizations.

    1. I understand what you mean but I completely disagree not that we discriminate women. but that they can't start the league and they can't make a profit nobody going to keep funding it.

  17. You want us to save it I mean we probably could, but if there was no funding it probably means that nobody will watch it. People all go uh why was it disbanded but you don't even help it out like giving in some funds. And no I feel like we shouldn't split it. I mean it isn't sexist to have males get more funding. The Females haven't even started yet maybe when you get it up and running than we can discuss about all this funding idea.

  18. I think that there is no problem with having a women's hockey league, and what I mean by that is that I can honestly say that I would not watch, I don't even watch the NHL. I do ,however, think that there is a reason it is being shut down, not enough eyes watching. Even a lot of the people who say we need a women's hockey league don't actually watch, and If enough people start watching now then maybe the league will be saved.

  19. I mean if women want to play hockey go for it. If you want a league that totally fine but if you cannot keep a solid revenue thats on you. Dont expect the male league to donate their hard earned money just to keep a league. Honestly I didn't even know there was a women hockey league. Its not the fault of men that they make more of an income and later on are recommended to donate money.

  20. I really do care about the Canadians women’s hockey league. Unfortunately it’s just not realistic, in our world people watch more of the men’s league for example the NHL. It’s a great idea to have a woman’s league but unfortunately why waste time and why waste the money when you can be using on something else. And idea for funding could be to make more people watch it because that’s how you get the money but it’s just not gonna happen . It is sad to see this decision being made but it’s just the smart thing to do...

  21. I think that having a women's league is very important. The reason why they stopped it was because they weren't getting enough money to keep it going. To keep the league running, it's up to the viewers/fans. I think that if more people watched the game and bought tickets, then they'd have the money to fund it. There's many people complaining about how they stopped it, but are those people buying tickets or watching? Probably not.

  22. Sports for spectators are a form of entertainment and so if people do not want to see it then I think that their should be no need. So in this case I think because not a large amount of people enjoy watching women's hockey it should be canceled although it shame because a lot of people are going to be with out a job and it would be pretty hard to have go back and get a degree.

  23. I honestly think that it is so sad to see the CWHL go because theirs women who now do knit a have job cannot even do the one thing hat they are good at professionally anymore because there was not enough money. I honeslty do believe that it is important to have a women’s hockey league in Canada because men’s sports are shown as why more interesting and fun compared to women’s games even though they are he exact same sport and also because let’s say that you are a little girl who wanted to play professionally in Canada, well you can’t anymore because they cut the funding. I honestly think that the funds should be split relatively fair because since it they the exact same sport why can’t we have the same amount of funding for men and women?

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think it is important to have a women’s hockey league when there is also a men’s league. Both parties should both be able to pursue this sport as a career. However, because of little funding, they’re getting rid of the women’s hockey league in Canada. They should at least let women play in the men’s league if they’re good enough. I don’t think that there’s much we can do anymore to save the league seeing as how they’d already announced the decision was due to lack of funding. It would make a difference if some people who were complaining about this would actually help out because chances are, they weren’t even going to any games or watching them to begin with. At the end of the day, the league that brings in more fans and revenue will receive more funding. In a perfect world, both male and female leagues would get the same amount of funding. Unfortunately, the women’s league just had a smaller fan base.
