Last Friday's shooting in two New Zealand mosques left 50 people dead and 50 others injured.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern promised to change gun laws.
How can we prevent mass shootings in the future?
Do you believe changing gun laws will prevent mass shootings?
Explain.
I think it is fair to say that there are two very important factors to look at: media and gun laws.
ReplyDeleteMedia plays a very important role in all of this. Because of social media, hate groups and other organisations are able to spread their beliefs and messages without drawing too much attention to themselves. I believe every media outlet out there should begin paying more attention to what people post and write. If I go on youtube this instant, I can easily pick a video, and if scroll through comments, I will probably find something pretty disgusting or offensive. Bottom line, companies like snapchat and Instagram need to pay more attention to these hateful comments.
Concerning guns laws, I have one question: Why are guns available to the public in the first place? I mean, maybe if you like to go hunting, sure, you will need one, but other that that, I do not see an actual reason why a person should own a gun. If somebody comes to rob your house, just do what they say. Don’t fight them off, or else you will probably die. Just cooperate.
Basically, I do not see any downside on putting a full ban on firearms available to the public, unless you enjoy going hunting.
Panagis there are many reasons to own a gun. First of all if someone breaks into my home with the intention of killing my family or taking my things I should be able to defend myself. (Its illegal to defend yourself with a firearm in Quebec even if the attacker has one thought i'd throw that out there) Also great blog!
DeleteLove this blog. Well done!
DeleteSticker gun laws may make it harder for these things to happen but at the end of the day of someone has radical intentions and money they can find away to get the guns so yes I do think gun control should have tight guidelines but to say this will stop these events from happening is ignorance.
ReplyDeleteI agree it will not stop massacres for good, just make it harder to carry out one.
Deletei totally agree great blog
DeleteI believe that tighter gun laws would do literally nothing to prevent mass shootings in the future. I myself am I licensed firearm user so I know the laws and new Zealand has similarly strict laws to Canada so I have a general Idea of what is going on. First of all the gun used by this horrible person was ILLEGALLY MODIFIED! the weapon used was already illegal so what's the point in making it more illegal. (It was a modified AR-15 for those who care) Also do they think that serial killers won't kill people because its harder to legally get a gun? It isn't as difficult as you might think to get an illegal firearm so what's the point? Serial killers don't care about the law they will get guns and they will kill people and making it harder for law abiding citizens to get their guns is just downright stupid. All of these "tighter gun laws" are just posturing and it won't do anything. It would be much better to get more people to track down future serial killers and stop them before they kill people. I just hope the government actually does something instead of punishing their citizens for something that could have been prevented had the right systems been in place.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement
DeleteI would have to say yes and not because with everything that has happens it would make it harder to have guns and to create more mass shootings in the future but also someone in the world could just bribe someone to look the other way about it and then the whole issue would start again so yes it would make a difference by making it harder to have mass shooting but people could always find another way.
ReplyDeleteya that's true
DeleteI think making the gun laws more serious could help but it wont completely stop it, at the end of the day we cannot change peoples ways of thinking and we cannot predict whether these people are 100% okay mentally.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I still think changing gun laws will still allow shooters to get their hands on a gun, they can even find a way to build one. It might prevent less shootings but it will definitely not get rid of it 100%. It also doesn't matter what type of weapon they possess, they're still serials from the start to the end, laws won't stop them from killing innocent lives just because of their past/what happens in their brain.
ReplyDeleteI also believe that a lot of mass shooters have some sort of problem going on in their head or maybe a past traumatic experience that affected them for the rest of their lives, but that doesn't mean in anyway what they did is right. Great blog!
DeleteI think that changing gun laws is a great start to slow down the rate of shootings because the harder it is to get a gun, the less people will have one. Even though gun laws will lower the amount of shootings in the country, it will not stop all shootings from happening because there are still ways to get a gun. Another way we could stop mass shootings is if we just banned guns everywhere so no one could bring a gun anywhere.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the slowing down, great blog
DeleteI agree that implementing more gun laws will decrease the likelihood of shootings, interesting blog.
DeleteMass shootings happen because there are guns and people filled with hate for others will always be around. Therefore I do not believe that changing gun laws will prevent mass shootings from happening. I would suggest make it illegal to have guns as a solution however people would still be able to get guns because we have so many of them in the world and its hard to just dispose metal objects. Although changing accessibility and laws about guns could lessen the likely hood of mass shootings.
ReplyDeleteNo laws stop anything. We aren't suppose to steal but people steal all the time, you aren't suppose to drink before 18 and everyone drinks before 18. Making the rules stricter will never stop it from happening completely. Any mass shooter has big issues in the brain so I recommend that in school there is more talk about mental health and things like that so maybe we can catch the psychos early enough so that they don't go around shooting people.
ReplyDeletereally good points, and an even better blog
DeleteI think that catching them while their young is a great idea. Great blog!
DeleteI really think, if we changed gun laws, theses mass shootings will not disappear over night, and there is absolutely a chance it will happen again. Guns or not, there will be ridiculous people who are crazy in their minds to do this type of stuff. Of course this law could improve it. But then again, we need to find more solutions.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, these shootings won't disappear over night. Good blog.
DeleteI honestly think that there is no way to prevent these mass shootings. You never know what people are thinking. There could be a normal person walking in the street and the next day they're on the news for being a part of a mass shooting. By having stricter gun laws isn't going to change much. New Zealand already had very strict gun laws and then this happened. There's no way to completely stop these mass shootings from happening.
ReplyDeleteThat could be awesome, awesome opinion and blog!
DeleteObviously stricter gun laws are the solution to help reduce them but there will still always be people who are able to get their hands on guns and will end up killing people. Even though it wont completely stop them I still believe that we should really apply very strict gun laws in all countries. Why do you think the most mass shoutings happen in the USA? because they nearly have no gun laws what so ever. Yes guns are the main problem but crazy people are also the other half.
ReplyDeletethat was me ryan
Deletei agree, nice blog ryan

ReplyDeleteI definitely think that making gun laws much tighter (meaning it’s very hard to get your hands on a gun) would definitely bring down the number of mass shootings that take place in the world. I think is good that their prime minister is taking charge. I think a way of preventing these things from happening could be to change gun laws, and also maybe make like everyone take a test to determine whether you’re capable of committing such a crime (is that’s even possible i don’t know) but I think if that were possible, then something could be done, and we’d know in advance who’s capable of doing such horrible things. Then again, that would be a huge controversy and it’s probably not even possible but I think it could be cool. It also wouldn’t just be for New Zealand, but for everywhere and for everyone.
ReplyDeleteNew Zealand already banned semi-autos. The shooter got it off the black market.
DeleteI wonder why, you can get anything off the black market as soon as you want it you can have it for the right price. The more you think about it the scarier it gets.
DeleteI think it’s just horrible what happened. Not only did the shooter do it, but he live-streamed it like a FPS. That’s some f****d up stuff. I don’t think gun laws will fix it though. They will stop the single victim shootings but the people that have planned a mass shooting will find another way to get a gun. They can get it off the black market or another country. What we need to do is find these psychopaths before they commit the crime and put them in a mental institution.
ReplyDeleteI do not think that this thing will change as long as people believe in white supremacy there will always be shooting there will always be things that people will do that is racist or unethical. I mean banning guns in countries does nothing. It is usually depending how the kid or the person grew up and what he was taught maybe not everyone argues with me on that point, but guns can be everywhere you can get them easily and sneak them in illegaly but all to say that this situation and problem will not be resolved easily or fast. And banning is going to make the shooters harder to get the gun, but there is always a way.
ReplyDeleteHonestly we cannot prevent mass shootings just because of the fact that they will always happen. However we can reduce the amount we have yearly. Changing the gun laws will help a lot. For example shootings happen in the US quite often. You can get a gun as easy as getting your earphones taken away by Mr Allali. However in Canada we tragic events maybe 3 times a year. Us at least get 15 incidents a year. BAN GUNS.

ReplyDeleteThis shooting breaks my heart. How can someone go into such a warm community with so much hate and just cold-heartedly take innocent people's lives? I am at a loss. I don't know how to prevent mass shootings anymore and I don't know how much changing gun laws will do. The best, in my opinion, would be to have guns outlawed, but even then, there will be ways to access firearms. The only real way to prevent mass shootings is not to hate, which unfortunately, is impossible for an entire human population. My condolences to all those who lost a loved one in this horrific incident, I mourn with you. It's more than religion, it's humanity and I pray for everyone. Allah be with you.
ReplyDeleteI think there are 2 factors in where and why there are shootings in certain places, one being the people being crazy and the other is how easy it is to get the guns. This is important because even if you make it impossible to get guns in that country, it would only solve half the problem, they could still get it off the black market (in which the shooter did). There are also laws for most things, but there are always a select few that apparently don't apply to these laws.
ReplyDeleteI agree no matter how strict gun laws can be the black market will always exist meaning these crazy people will still be able to get their hands on guns. Great blog!
DeleteChanging gun laws would do nothing to prevent mass shootings, I would know just how thorough and rigorous the system is and it cannot become any tighter without an all out ban. Just think about it for a second if we ban guns bad people will still do bad things. For example say we do ban guns, chances are people will be using knives and vehicles as weapons. The only way to prevent mass shootings is to teach the appropriate use of firearms and mandatory service. Switzerland has a gun in every household, every male will be put in to the Swiss military upon reaching the age of majority. In the entire history of Switzerland going back about 200-900 years depending on when you start counting, there has been 3 mass shootings. The first was all the way back in 1932 when a rogue military element fired into a group of anti fascists killing thirteen. The was in 2001 when a man took his gun and killed his parents, his neighbors then himself. The third and final one in 205 is when five were found dead one is suspected to be the killer, authorities believe it was a family dispute.
ReplyDeleteI think gun laws are getting a lot stricter everywhere in the world after the lastest shootings that have occurred all over the planet. I think making it harder for people to get guns in the first place is key to having less of these tragedies. I think more background checks especially on their relatives and parents that could have enfluenced these terrorists to committing these awful crimes. I don’t think changing gun laws will PREVENT mass shootings but it will surely help with the amount of them. Crazy people will always get their hands on what they want one way or another. My prayers go to all the families who lost someone dear to them in this latest attack.
ReplyDeleteI believe that making gun laws more strict will decrease the number of shootings. Although New Zealand had some pretty strict gun laws already I think that people abuse their privilege of owning a gun by using it in a destructive way. No one should be allowed to own a semi-automatic rifle like an AR-15, which is also a MILITARY WEAPON used by the actual military!!! Even if there's an intruder in your house you can easily defend yourself with any other gun, although it is illegal in Quebec. The AR-15 and the user is the cause of many mass shootings all across the world, like in Parkland, Florida. I'm not saying that any other gun wouldn't be as harmful but maybe step by step we can get rid of the ones that cause a lot of damage and shouldn't be in the possession of someone who hasn't had proper training and especially if you have no use for it except for being in the military. Also, why would anyone need that in their home anyway? You don't need to go hunting with a semi-automatic rifle or have to protect your self with that killing machine.
ReplyDeleteTo start with, I don't believe that changing gun laws will affect mass shootings at all. I think that the people who really feel the need to hurt people will find a way to get guns regardless on new laws. Second of all, I think that the only way to prevent shootings or any hatred and violent acts, is by us. I think that it is our job, once the time comes, to teach our children that everything is okay and that hating on people is unacceptable. It really is up to the way we raise our children and the next generation.
ReplyDeleteI agree, it's up to us as a society to teach the future generations acceptance, and that this kind of hatred is wrong
Deletegun laws are extremely important. I personally do not believe that it is possible to completely stop gun violence, however i do believe that if our goal is to reduce the number of shootings, it would not hurt to make it more difficult to get certain types of firearms. If we can make it impossible for someone to get a gun without resorting to the black market, it would be progress (toward that specific goal). I also believe that there are people who can use guns properly and safely, but sometimes its impossible to know the intensions of someone and I don't know if at this point we should take that risk. the thing thats important to know is that there will always be the next 911, next darkest hour and next tragedy that wakes everybody up for a moment, and if we can't prevent them 100% we must do our best to make them few and far between. (sorry for not writing this that well I'm tired)
ReplyDeleteThe world we live in today is truly cruel. It's sad and frankly scary to think that there are people out there willing to take drastic measures such as to kill innocent people to demonstrate their hatred towards a certain race, religion, culture... I truly feel for the families that have lost their loved ones to this tragic event. These assassinations are taking place way too often. Yes, we can change gun laws in attempt to prevent these mass shooting but the thing is the world is full of crazy people. Even if we were to make gun laws stricter there are still number of ways people will be able to get their hands on a gun. We should have stricter background checks as well as a mental health examination for anyone interested in purchasing a rifle. I also think that we should have more security in places of worship since these shootings seem to be reoccurring taking place in these locations. Finally I think there should be harsher restrictions on video games. Video games these days seem to become more and more vengeful and aggressive. Kids are being exposed to gun violence from a young age and being manipulated into thinking of the game as a reality making the winner feel invincible.
ReplyDeleteEnforcing stricter gun laws won’t do anything to prevent mass shootings entirely, however it is a huge factor in lowering the number of overall shootings. As many people have already mentioned, the increased difficulty in acquiring a firearm will only slow down these kinds of people; they could still very easily get these weapons off of the black market, for example. Mass shootings don’t just magically happen because people can get their hands on guns at any given time. These events are caused by sick people filled with nothing but hate, and sadly these kinds of people will always exist. The only way we can prevent, or at least lessen this kind of hate is to open people minds as well as set a strong example of love and acceptance for the generations to come.
ReplyDeletefair point, great blog ai-lan
DeleteIt's terrible how people can kill people for no reason, the sad thing is is that theres really nothing we can do to prevent it, if we ban guns then they'll just get them illegally, if theres a guard there they'll just die too. supper sad but theres really not much we can do as far as i can see
