Today is a HUGE day in Canadian History.
Cannabis (marijuana) is now legal across Canada.
Do you have any concerns about legalizing marijuana? If so, what are your concerns?
Do you think the legalization of marijuana will be good or bad for Canadians?
Explain.
When the Liberals were put into power in 2015 and I heard about their plans to legalize cannabis, I was all for it. Legalizing it would have huge benefits. People with certain diseases would be able to receive prescriptions for medical marijuana, the government would control the distribution of cannabis instead of criminals, and people who enjoy smoking it would be able to possess a certain quantity. Honestly, I do not think that marijuana is any worse than alcohol. People enjoy consuming it. You should probably consume both products over the age of 18, and never have too much of it. If you do consume either and need a ride home, call a cab or have a friend who isn't stoned or drunk take you home.
ReplyDeleteWhat I am the most concerned about is if we are ready to legalize it. When Colorado first legalized it in 2012, the government and police were not completely prepared. After awhile, the entire state suffered the consequences of not being prepared. There was an increase of car accidents, overdoses, people going insane or getting depressed.
Another concern of mine is whether 18 should be the minimum wage to be able to try Marijuana. Even when we become 18, our brain is still developing. As most of us know, marijuana can damage your brain while it is still developing. This can lead to dementia and other diseases in the brain. I agree with the CAQ's plan to increase the age to 21.
Marijuana is a plant that while it may be good to enjoy and has tons of marvellous health benefits, it can also have disastrous consequences. I just hope that the government knows what it is doing.
yes i think it’s a good idea too
DeleteI was fine with everything you said but I just hate it when people say it was medical benefits. IT DOESN'T. Medical merijuana is just a way for smokers to get it when it wasn't legal. It doesn't do anything except as painkiller reasons, but then you might as well take an ibuprofen
DeleteYes there are medical benefits. They can be used to treat depression, Chronic pain, post-traumatic stress disorder, multiple sclerosis, and other problems.
DeleteI completely agree with your blog, because with great power, comes great responsibility. If weed is to be legalized, we need to use it appropriately and not abuse it or suffer the consequences. Great blog!
DeleteI think legalizing marijuana is kind of bad thing but when I think about it's not really a bad thing because a lot more people die from smoking than marijuana in Canada. I do have concerns that because marijuana is legalized their potentially might be more car crashes from people being distracted or intoxicated what ever you want to call it however this is also contradicted because there are already many distractions already like phones, children, radios and even more to come so it's not like marijuana becoming legal is a major issue currently.
ReplyDeleteI like how you also looked at the cons of marijuana legalization while many other people only looked at the pros. Interesting view point and great Blog!
DeleteI think the legalization of marijuana or cannabis in Canada is great and it comes with many benefits. I think we are ready to take this step. Weed comes with many health benefits and we would have a lot less crime. What I mean by this is: the only reason why weed would be a bit expensive or so valuable is because it is illegal so if it was legal, there would be a lot less casualties in drug wars and the price would go down. I think we are responsible enough to control ourselves and regulate how much we smoke. As many ignorant people think that weed is so bad that it can cause brain damage and everything bad, I got news for you people: you're wrong. Cannabis has many health benefits including: chronic pain relief, cures side effects from chemotherapy for cancer patients, helps with depression and anxiety, it makes you happy, relieves stress and helps you relax,In some cases it helped a few people fight their alcohol addictions and other drug addictions,It, also being the first day, is already an 8,000,000,000$ industry and would have a huge positive impact on the stock market and to our economy ,I could go on forever. Disadvantages include: lower IQ (only from ADDICTS like addicts who smoke like two joints every day starting from their early childhood)Even then, their IQ's are not much lower than those who aren't addicted. It also messes with your balance and memory a bit. So if you compare the ton of positives to the very few negatives, you can see that the positives outweigh the negatives by far. So we need to ask ourselves, is weed really all that bad?
ReplyDeleteI think you make good points about the possible benefits.
DeleteDOES NOT HAVE HEALTH BENEFITS
DeleteGood research Kurt. Interesting opinion. Great blog!
Deletei think that it’s way better now that it’s legal because now all the bad weed that can contain dangerous substances are off the streets because people won’t buy it from the street dealers but from the government, because it is cheaper and safer.

DeleteActually, recent studies show that weed will still be popular on the black market because it will be cheaper then buying it at government owned stores. Also, on the black market, you can buy as much as you want, while in government controlled shops, you can only buy a small quantity.
DeleteGet out of my class karina, but yes there are a lot of benefits.
DeleteI do not know much about the economics of weed but I assume with more supply and the same demand that you would be correct in your assumptions
DeleteI'm not sure how I feel about legalizing marijuana because there are some benefits I guess and lots of consequences. In my opinion, people who choose to smoke marijuana know the dangers of it and if they're still okay with it, there's not much we can do, it's their life, their decisions, etc. Smoking it once or twice to try it out won't affect your health as much as smoking 3-4 a day, all I have to say is; try and make the right decisions.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that people who already smoke it know the consequences and we can't really control it, great blog.
DeleteI honestly have no problem with legalization. It will bemefit in a lot of ways EXCEPT MEDICAL. It will be safer for people because it will just be pure and won't be laced with other things like fentanyl. It is just like alcohol in many ways. If you take too much then it ruins yo but otherwise it's fine. The only problem is which minors, because we have developping brains. But the main issue isn't even a canadian issue, it has to do with america. In america cannabis is an illegal drug, with the same illegality as cocaine. Most servers for credit cards like visa and mastercard and even bank cards are in america so all the data is present and accessible by the american government. This means that even if you buy from the SAQ, if you are using a card, you can be banned from the US. It doesn't matter that it's legal in Canada or that you are living in Canada, the US will just see someone in the illegal drug industry. One step further from this is the fact that even buying stocks in cannabis can result in being banend from the US. If you buy a share in a Cannabis dispensary then you can be considered as a supporter of an illegal drug. I find this stupid because it's legal in the country you're from. I completely agree with them not letting you take it across from the border but you shouldn't be banned for buying it. Even if you are going to Washington (where it's legal) the state laws don't apply and you can still get kicked out.
ReplyDeleteI personally do not have any concerns about the federal legalization of the psychedelic plant Cannabis Sativa, Cannabis Indica and Cannabis Ruderalis. More communally known as marijuana or weed. These are matters that I do not have much of an opinion in and yet I must streach this piece of litterateur that I am writting on a media platform made by google called blogger or as it is most often called a "blog" over 60 words of the English language.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your... insightful take on this matter. Great blog
Deletenice lesson
DeleteI think there are some benefits to having Cannabis legalized in Canada but at the same time there are some concerns to it. Even though it is legal to buy at the age of 18, there are still going to be under aged people that will buy it from the black market (dealers). I was reading some comment on other peoples blogs and some people are saying that there are no benefits to medical marijuana but I'm going to say a true story that happened to my dad's friends mom. She has Parkinson's Disease, which is a disease that deteriorates your muscles. She wasn't able to walk, speak or do anything herself and her son had to take care of her. Even though she was taking pills to help with side effects, her son was desperate for help because it was getting so bad. The side effects to these pills were that she started to have really bad hallucinations, she constantly thought that people were robbing her and she used to talk to people that weren't even with her. It made sleeping and daily life very hard for her. She couldn't have a proper conversation since she would get distracted by seeing things that weren't there. Her son was that desperate that he did his research and the first day it was legalized, he stood in line pretty much all day to get Cannabis Oil for his mom. After just one day of using it, putting a few drops in her mouth each day, her son can already see an improvement in her attitude, she can hold a conversation longer and she started to sleep better at night. It was like a miracle for her son and she is getting her life back due to this. This is just one story among others proving that medical marijuana is not just a painkiller but can seriously help someone in need. I personally think people are making a big deal out of the legalization of Cannabis and everyone is talking about it now but in a month or so it's just going to be another thing that's legalized. I think most people are expecting to see people smoking it on every corner but I don't think that that will be the case. To me by putting an age limit on who can buy it is just asking for people under age to smoke it more.Even though our brains are still developing, it's not going to stop people who already have dealers fro smoking it. At the same time I think that some people are going to take advantage of this law but it will only be a small percentage of the population. It doesn't really effect me and I don't really mind that it's legalized as long as the government can find a way to kind of control it in a way that we don't see it everywhere.
ReplyDeleteI agree medicinal marijuana can be beneficial for many different illnesses. Great blog. My prayers go out to her and her family.
DeleteI really don’t have and opinion about the legalization of marijuana in Canada. Why? Well because I am still have underaged and I absolutely do not plan on being involved in it in any sort of way. I personally do think that it will be safer for Canadians because it’s thrue the the government and the Canadian government compared to others, has our best interest. Hopefully this goes a good way and all Canadians stay safe.

ReplyDeleteThe legalization of marijuana comes with pros and cons just like many other controversial issues in today's society. In terms of medicinal marijuana the legalization of cannabis can be considered beneficial for those suffering from AID's disease, depression, Alzheimer, cancer, chronic pain, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis... I'm all for supplying patients with ressources that will help their illnesses or reduce their pain and suffering. The only thing I worry about is the fact that pot is for sale to the public. Just yesterday thousands of people crowded the streets downtown to get their hands on the drug. I fear the younger generations will be exposed to the the drug and consider it to be a "normal" phenomenon but instead it is an addictive drug that can have permanent long term effects.
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome Elisa! I really agree with the pint that maybe it’ll affect in a negative way the younger generations.
DeletePoint**
DeleteGreat job Elisa, I also think there are many pros and cons to this legalization. Nice blog.
DeleteI think that the legalization of marijuana can have benefits, but it can also be a bad thing. I’ve heard that by legalizing it, at least it won’t be laced with things that we don’t know or may not know that it contains these things. I also think that many people are really going to take advantage of this law. They’re gonna do a lot of it and no one can do anything about it. At least it will be in a way healthier which is good, because honestly my opinion is there is no way, even if it’s not legal, that people are going to stop doing it. It’ll just be secret with secret dealings with substances that we don’t know in the marijuana. So, I guess it’s a good thing it’s legal if that means it’s really pure and there is nothing else dangerous inside of it if that makes any sense.
ReplyDeleteI hadn’t really put much thought into the legalization of marijuana in Canada, seeing as how it does not affect me. My only real concern is that people might take this opportunity to perhaps over use this new privilege. There were already risks of intoxicated or distracted drivers, even before the legalization of marijuana, and this new law might add to the dangers of the road. In the end, I’d like to think that those who have chosen to make use of this law will do so responsibly and are already aware of the risks.
ReplyDeleteI think that the legalization of marijuana is a great thing, if you have some spare money invest in the Doritos stocks;). but on a serious note i think that it is a great thing because it has helped so many people and is safer than alcohol, I think that this will help everyone be a little more chill and not get so aggravated by every tiny thing in this world. the only con i can see here is how much easier it will be for minors to get kush, all you need is a friend who's 18 or even a fake ID. over all I think that this will help canada because of the amount of money they will make by selling weed.

ReplyDeleteI think it is a good thing for Canadians. I obviously think it should only be used recreationally, by people of legal age and for medical uses. It has many medical benefits and even if it wasn't legal, people would still probably do it. Now that the government is dealing with all the cannabis, we know there aren't unknown or dangerous substances added to the marijuana. Although I am all for safe, medical or recreational and definitely legal use of cannabis, I have one major problem. Although this won't affect you much if you only smoke recreationally, I have a problem with the smoking aspect. As a woodwind musician, I can't bear to lose my lung's power or weaken them. Even though marijuana can have many benefits, the smoking has to do something bad to your lungs. All in all though, I'm all for safe, recreational use. What a milestone Canada!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree and couldn't have said it better. Good job
DeleteI think everyone should get high all the time and I think you would benefit in getting high Emily.
DeleteI think the legalization of cannabis is a huge step for not only Canada, but all other countries in the world. I do like and dislike this new legalization. First of all, there was a canadian study that came out a few months ago comparing alcohol and "weed". Through the certain studies it was shown that in multiple ways, "weed" was considered better/healthier for you. Another study was also done where they tested people drunk and high when driving. Everyone when grunk was incapable of driving where 6 people out of a group of 24 when high were better or as good at driving when not high. The only thing that concerns me if I were a parent is the law about how a child from 12-18 can have 5gs or less of weed on them without getting charged for anything. I think they need to change that law and ut up the legal smoking age to at leats 20 years of age. Other than those arguments I pretty pleased on how our government has taken this new legalization. I am just as proud to be canadian as I was before!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you eep it up
DeleteI'm pretty sure that it is still illegal to carry it when you are 12 to 18. they will take it away but not charge you, like alcohol.
DeleteI think as soon as the next election comes Justin Trudeau will never be prime minister again thats what I think but you never know. I am not concern as long as it is not used in public areas and it's not like just cause it is legal everyone will just start doing it but some people do and I can't stop them and neither can anyone else. It is bad because we are going to have more drug addict to marijuana but it can help with medical.
ReplyDeleteactually marijuana is less addictive than coffee, and it's pretty much a myth that it will get you addicted to other drugs. Most people actually stop smoking marijuana after trying it.
DeleteI believe that it will actually be a help that cannabis is legal. there will be many more tests conducted on cannabis use since there will be people legally taking marijuana getting tested and it will be more known like alcohol. Many underground dealerships will go out of business which will keep the streets safe. since there is going to be much less focus on cannabis used by adults the focus will be put on keeping it away from adolescence and schools. Once people's brains are fully developed (late 20s) marijuana has no permanent effects on them, unlike alcohol which can kill brain cell's, although use of marijuana in adolescence can stunt their neurological growth forever and leave them less smart that they could have been. So kids, you got what you wanted, but just wait a few years (also you can be refused from travelling to the united states if you have smoked marijuana. just saying).
ReplyDeleteI honestly think that its about time cannabis is legal. I myself am not someone who can nor will benefit out of it, but I mean the amount of people that have been using the substance illegally is a lot. One of the goals is to decrease organized crime and drug trafficking and I think that it really help. However one of my concerns is the smell, marijuana has a very distinguished and unpleasant smell. And with using it in there home, I don't think that some neighbors would enjoy such a strong smell.
ReplyDeleteI believe the legalization of cannabis will be good for Canada but not for Canadians. Cannabis is already very accessible to many people thought he black market. This is very big industries and drug dealers can make a lot of money selling cannabis and other drugs. Legalizing it will make it so that the canadian government can get the money that would normally end up in the pockets of drug dealer. This is good as more money for our government means better roads, less taxes and many other benefits. On the other hand it might be annoying for the canadian people. Due to weed being more readily accessible more people are likely to use it. You will most likely smell weed more often but other than that there will be no change. I believe the legalization of weed was good as can give our government some much needed money.
ReplyDeleteGreat blog and I totally agree
DeleteI love that weed is legal. I think it shows that Montreal is very open to new ideas and accepting. You know we are the first industrial country to legalize the use of cannabis. I can't wait for everyone to be a stoner and I think it will be interesting to see where weed takes us. Isn't going to be at weddings as a celebration? Is it going to be as relevant as any type of alcohol in our lives today? I guess it will be cool to find out.
ReplyDeleteI found that Justin put it really well when he said "there is no black market for beer". This was interesting to me because its true, something like alcohol offers a similar effect and was treated completely differently as well as says how when you make something easily accessible there becomes no need for a black market.
ReplyDeleteI have mixed feelings about the legalization of marijuana, I think it is good because of stress reasons. Another reason The legalization is good is because now the street dealers are now going out of business, but I think that it is more bad than good though. One bad reason is that people can take advantage of this and use it recreationaly and daily.
ReplyDeleteI think that legalization of marijuana in Canada is good and bad. It shows a huge step for Canada and how we are developing as a country. Then again it could have negative effects such as kids who are underage not permitted to use it. I honestly don't have that much to say though because stuff like this doesn't interest me.
