Blog 11 - Monday, October 22, 2018

Towards the end of  Fahrenheit 451, we are introduced to the Harvard Hoboes. We learn that each person represents a different text. For example, Montag represents the Book of Ecclesiastes.

If you lived among the Harvard Hoboes, and you could represent any book in the world, which book would it be? Why?

  1. Reading is one my least favorite things to do. I absolutely hate it as it is very boring and not an enjoyable experience. I have only ever willing read comics as those have pictures which allows you to actually see the story you are being told. This adds to the experience as well as allowing for action which is something I love. Because of all of this I don't really pay attention when I read therefore I don't remember what I read. If I had to pick a book that I represent I would say diary of a wimpy kid because I read the books and watched the movies so I remember what happened. In conclusion don't read books there probably an audio book or better yet a movie and diary of a wimpy kid is awesome.

    1. Which book of the diary of a wimpy kid series would you memorize?

  2. I love reading. It is one of my many pastimes when I have nothing to do. At the same time, I also love music. So, I would memorize a book that combines both of my passions. If I had to pick a book that best represented me, I would have to choose a music book, filled with notes and bars and tabs so I can keep on memorizing songs while possibly reading a little bit about the song's history.

    2. I really like that you added your love for music. Would it be music for all instruments of different keys, or only on B flat for example? Would you treble clef or bass clef or both? Great blog!

  3. I do not often read books how ever if there is a book that I would like to memorize it would probably be "The Hobbit". I find it to be a really interesting story. I would not say that this is the moral of the story but the story represents someone who has a very comfortable life and gives it away to have an perilous exciting journey.

  5. As you could tell I'm a heavy reader, I think that one of the most important books written is the book called "think and grow rich" by Napoleon Hill. this highly influential book with over 15 million copies sold is basically a book that teaches about the laws of attractions and impact that the power of thought can have on ones life.

  6. I do not read often, but if I were to chose to one book to represent, it would be the the first book of the I funny series. I read this book in grade 7 and it was my favorite book that I have ever read. This book is about a kid who is trying to win a comedy tournament. The tournament is like America’s Got Talent but instead you make jokes. The reason I liked this book so much is because it does a great job of showing that you should always follow your passion no matter what others say about you.

  8. For this blog I decided to do a little research and put a little more effort into my blog. To start off, the book I decided to write about is a book I have not read before and was simply chosen because I found tons a reviews of this book stating how amazing it was. This book was selected by the Modern Library among the 100 masterpieces of British literature and wins the James Tait Black Memorial Prize in the year of its publication. Time magazine ranks it among the top 100 novels in English between 1923 and 2005. After reading and doing more research I knew this would be the best novel to "memorize" if I were to be a Harvard Hoboe. This book was situated in India, in the British Raj in the 1920s against a backdrop of independence struggles, while an Indian is falsely accused of raping an Englishwoman. I find this book very appealing eventhough I am not the biggest fan of books.

  10. Since this is a really long blog I had to cut it up into 3 parts

To be honest, if I was amongst the Harvard Hoboes I would just love to be any book that teaches people like a real history book about World War I or World War II. Even an English book or a translator from English to another language. Or a Bibliography of a man that change the world to show how they can change to form a new society. All these are good chooses I will choose my top 10 books and explain why. But they are not in order from best to worst they are all tied. The first one might be the best one but whatever. Harmsworth's Universal Encyclopedia this is a series that I would love to be it is a long about 12 books of encyclopedia from the name it has about everything in this series on any subject Math, English, languages and etc. If you can name a subject there is probably pages on that subject. the 12 books each represent a volume so if the volume were together that is the book I want to be the most because it has the most information. It shows a big value to the civilization if you were to rebuild it. Though no one will ever be able to memorize it, also the question said what book you would represent which should mean you have it all memorized. So I choose this book for the vast variety of subjects from a countries history to World history or to Every language. All subjects in math about famous people who did things extraordinary or about science or different religions and belief. This is the best and most useful book to rebuild society. Book number 2 Shakespeare books and show how people felt before and the different emotions all of his plays represent. There are so many plays you can choose from Romeo Juliet, Macbeth, Midsummer Night's Dream, Hamlet, Twelve Nights, or Taming of the Shrew. They all so different types of world and how people acted before and to get them into other types of things, not just technology and read plays things that others have created. This will show how people love this before and that we should follow the paths.

  11. Part 2

Book number 3 I think we should have a book mostly about creativity. it should show how to draw what to draw or how to create something and use your mind. If you want to rebuild society you have to start off with books and if you don't have creativity you will have a hard chance of writing of recreating a story or dances or anything you do that you need creativity to do better. This will show that there are other things you can do in life not just stare at a parlor wall for 8-12 hours a day or more doing nothing but talking to a TV right now you will look really weird if you sat in front of the TV for more than 12 hours talking to Television. Another book would be maybe the biggest dictionary that translates English to the top 6 languages in the world. This book can teach the society different languages and help learn languages that people forgot. So people can communicate with others in different countries. Because with the evidence that shows in the book the story takes place a little bit between 90-100 years ago. So countries with different languages should still be a thing. Learning a different language will help the society and the new generations to talk in different languages. One book that would be useful in this society and also funny is how to drive the book. Clearly, we need to have that book again and make everyone learn again because you can't just be driving do a road that should be 30 km per hour that turned into a 250 km per hour that is not how things work. also, a book that works really well with that book is how to construct things. By how they drive I don't think that they have stop signs and lights. This will teach them to use more lights and how to make roads properly so we don't need a 30 feet billboard. I think that both they should learn how to drive properly and how to build roads and how many lights and stop signs and change all of the speed limits.

  12. Part 3

Another good book to memorize is an old Law book. If we have an old law book we can recreate those laws that made a country good and not madness. They can reinforce those laws so that if you kill someone you either will go to prison or Juvi. They should have other laws they can create such as firemen you can only put out fires and stuff, how many hours max you are allowed to spend on electronics, or even how many hours you have to read a book or even more police on the streets. These will how to keep the madness down in the society and how people will listen. If they don't listen to the new government you punish them but also add why and how they can prevent themselves from not being punished again. Another book is how they can have a book like Indeed.com to show you different jobs and show the citizens of this society that there are more jobs than a fireman and a teacher that teaching nothing and a person that is the biggest couch potato. You can have more police and other jobs such as barber, marine biologist, doctor, dentist or a teacher that actually teaches. Things in these books are very necessary to help rebuild society. The last book I will say is The Bible. The Bible should be a one of the books to those who don't believe a lot in science and have something to believe and put there trust in and have help them be a better person. They can know what happened like how the world was built and how they miracle things happened. They can have a break on sundays and read books instead of watching anything. This is able to change everything. All these books are hints at things we should always keep. You guys always have your own oppinion but we will all end up at the same place in the futur. So it doesn't matter what you think it if you do the right thing before you die.

  13. I love reading so much. Some of my favourite books of all time consist of "It" by Stephen King, "The Chamber of Secrets" by J.K. Rowling (and all books from the "Harry Potter series), "The Death Cure" by James Dashner (and all books from "The Maze Runner" series) and "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne collins (and all books from "The Hunger Games" trilogy). Although I love all these books dearly, there is one book I haven't mentioned that I think I would represent. That book is "the Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton. I read this book with school and I fell in love with the characters and this book made me laugh, cry and think about so many things. I can't exactly relate to the characters but I can relate to their struggle in a way. When I read "The Outsiders" with school, I was in sec 1, in Mr. Katz's class. I had just gotten out of a really dark period in my life which easily remains the hardest and saddest part of my life today. When I read the book, my heart went out to the main character Ponyboy and the side character Johny. I couldn't exactly relate to their situation but I could relate to some of their feelings and how things were hard for them. Although these characters and I weren't at all facing the same struggles (for Ponyboy and Johny it was mostly because of their social position and something they'd done, for me it was personal and about my one thoughts), I felt like I could relate to them. Before sec 1, my mind was in a lot of pain (metaphorically, not literally) and everything was just chaos in my head. Chaotic emptiness. That's exactly what I thought these two characters were going through and it hurt because that is something I wouldn't want anyone to ever go through, because I know how hard it can be. This book was a chance for me to see things from another perspective in another situation. This book was my favourite book of all time, and it is the book I think I would represent. I've also read it twice because for me, that book means so much.

  14. One book that would definitely represent me is the Holy Bible. Now that is such a good read! The newest testament is probably my favorite. What can I say I just adore the son the father and the holy spirit. I love all the lessons that you learn in the Bible and how after you read different parts you feel different things. But in the end everyone who reads the Bible religiously is a calm positive person. That is why I think it's important to read something that has good messages so you become a better person

    1. Not everyone who reads the bible is a calm person. They are judgy to people who are not christian. And there are a lot of extremists. The crusades started because of this. People will take it too literally and shove religion down people's throats.

  15. I really don’t like reading. It is one of my least favourite things to do. To have a book represent me would be something I would be able to come up with if I did read a lot but I don’t. I do have to say though, that I do really enjoy comics whether it’s because of the silly behaviour of the characters or the pictures or the fact that there is very little reading involved. Either way I feel like I can connect to these books but not just one in particular. Maybe the Garfield’s (more of a cartoon but there are comics) because Garfield hates Monday’s and is super lazy just like me. I think a lot of people can relate to Garfield. Those are books I’d be able to memorize and understand and have represent me because they are simple and straight forward. I can connect with them and there isn’t much writing therefore it would be easy to know by heart. It also has pictures and I have a photographic memory so for so many reasons that series would be an amazing fit for me!

  16. I'm t really a big fan of reading non-exciting books but if lived among the Harvard Hoboes then I would choose book that would be useful for restarting the society. I would pick a Stephen Hawking book. Probably "The Universe in a Nutshell". I wouldn't read any of these books on my own time for fun but they would be important books for starting the new society. It would give people the knowledge they need to understand. A second book of choice would be "What is Law?". This would be another good book because then we could start the civilization with the ideologies of a free western democratic society.

  17. I think that the book(books) that I would pick is the harry potter series. I chose this because the books really represent me as a person with of its whimsical and fantastic aspects. And it is also a book series that I know kinda by heart( not word for word ). And the me the Harvard Hobboes remember a certain book which for me is this book series.

  18. That is so true about you Noah because you are always calm, but crazy, weird and whimsical when you want to be

  19. I would represent a goosebump book. I would represent it because I think these are the greatest books ever and I just love horor stuff. These books used to be really scary to some kids but I never got scared. Even certain horror movies I font get scared. I would also represent this book because there is always a good plot. Therefor the book is more interesting.

  20. I think I would represent a is a cookbook because yes, we are living in a crazy world where the government barely approves of my assistance, but I still want the people around me to enjoy a nice meal by the fire and forget about their worries for a little bit. Lets not be animals and at least eat well am I right?

  21. I don't hate reading and it's not my least favourite past time but with my busy schedule I often don't have much time to sit down and enjoy a nice book. One book that I read that I absolutely loved was the hunger games books. I think the trilogy goes down as some of my favourite books. I find them extremely interesting especially since the author Suzanne Collins explores such a different theme and setting.

  22. Since I don't really read books and really don't like books at all(HATE them). So with that, I think that the book that would represent me is "Reading for Dummies". I think that that book represents me because I am really bad at reading and like I said before, I don't like it.

  24. If i could represent a book it would be wonder. i chose this book because it shows how cold the real world can be and how its not just a happy place. Wonder has many important quotes in it such as ' don't judge a gook by its cover'. Wonder teaches you that its ok to be different and that you are always gonna have struggles in life but if you surround yourself with the best people its gonna be ok.

  26. If I were a book, I would probably be a cookbook. I can't name a specific one, but the reason why I would be a cookbook is because I have a passion for baking and cooking. I love making tacos an cupcakes especially, and I get my knowledge from the cookbook. I also really science so that's also supports my reason.

  27. If I were a book I think I'd represent an Italian cookbook. I help my mom and my family every time they cook so I remember everything they do since they cook so often. I think I would be very useful to the Havard Hoboes since it seems like they don't eat very well. Also, Italian meals are full of complex carbs so they would have energy for days so that if they're on the run they'll get away faster!

  28. I don't read as often, with my work and busy schedule and all, but if I had to represent a book, I would choose my 6th grade book; "Island of The Blue Dolphins". I did a presentation on this book in sec 1, I feel like it really describes me in some ways. Karana, the main character is stuck on an island after her family didn't go back and save her, she found a way to live on that island with her brother who later dies, she's always finding a way to turn her negatives into a positive, she also finds herself out of tough situations, which I sometimes do too.

  29. I had to think long and hard about which book I would choose to represent, should the opportunity ever arise. It was a little difficult because I haven’t really read any books considered to be worthy of containing important values or teachings. If I could represent any book in the world, it would probably be a book of philosophy. Philosophers can provide us with their in depth vues on the world and human nature. They can be very informative when rebuilding a society.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I don't think there is a specific book that I would represent but I know it would have to do with art. I enjoy art and I think that it is something that represents me in a special way. Most people don't know that I enjoy drawing and painting which is why one of these book would describe me best. I also enjoy sports so those kinds of books are something that I could see myself representing.

  31. If I had to remember a book it would have to be something by James Patterson, I’ve always loved the way we writes with such descriptive detail. He writes in so many different genres but my favourite will always have to be his murder mystery or mystery novels they’ve always been such interesting reads. He’s just one of those authors with a way on words that makes you never want to put down the book

  32. I think I would have been represented by the diary of a Wimpy kid. The reason is because I am short and skinny just like him, he is also the same age as me. We have many other differences but acts like a teenager just like me. He likes video games etc
