Hurricane Florence, which made landfall in North Carolina on Friday, completely devastated most of the Carolinas and caused widespread flooding. Hurricane Florence has flooded rivers (swells of 60 feet above regular water levels), roads, and houses.
Many residents had to abandon their homes and everything inside them.
If your house was flooded, and you could only take one item with you, what would that item be?
Explain.
I believe that if my house flooded taking something would be unnecessary because of the fact floods move slowly and my house is on a hill. On top of that we have bilge pumps and sand bags in the basement. Even if it was a biblical level flood we have a boat which I believe can hold much more then a single item. Tough this situation is hypothetical is is also unrealistic. If I had to take one thing and I was being forced to take one thing I would duck tape my most valuable possessions together.
ReplyDeleteIt is better to read it on my blog site!
https://christopherrodinosenglish.blogspot.com/
I found it very interesting and original how you proposed alternate solutions to the question. You clearly thought about the question deeply before responding. Keep up the good work!
DeleteI do not if the idea of a flood is unrealistic as we did get flooded like 2 years ago but I think that to have time to only get 1 item might be unrealistic.
DeleteI have 2 terabytes hard drive that has all my pictures since I was a baby I mean that holds a lot of memories so that will be the thing the most valuable to me. a house and the stuff inside can always be re bought, but your memories from before can never be bought and never replaced. The photos starts when I am 1 to 13. In my house even the most valuable thing can be bought. Even my pet fish, I my place does get flooded he can just be free and live on in the open water. Also this situation happening is highly unlikely where we are.
ReplyDeleteCheck out my website:https://yuhuajasonyang.blogspot.com/
why don't you upload your pictures so if you do loose them you can get them back!
DeleteBaby Yu Hua YANG KSDKSD you should bring pics to class.
Deletedamn, that's a lot of space. But other wise I totally agree.
DeleteWell here's a solution. Bring something better. Photos are on the cloud (hopefully) and you can get access to them anywhere in the world.
DeleteTotally agree with the fish part. He'll be living his best life if there was a flood.
Deletei think that if my house was to flood I'd take my new puppy and tell my parents to take my cat and my other dog because my dogs can't swim and my cat hates water. the way i see it is everything that i loose for example my phone or my lap top they can be replaced but nothing could replace animals.
ReplyDeleteIf my house were to be flooded, I think I would have saved my phone. I know everyone might say the same thing, but I have a lot of saved memories on their, my music, my pictures, my "files", etc. Nowadays people are constantly on their phones and I would agree too, I AM on my phone after school in my spare time. If I were to lose my parents, I would easily be able to call them on my phone.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, people are constantly on their phones, and it holds a lot of importance. Great blog
DeleteTotally agree with your statement I feel that our phones are not always the best for us but in a situation like this your phone is very important
ReplyDeleteI know everyone is saying that they would bring their phone and I have to agree with them. As I first read the description of the vlog I knew that my phone would robably be the most useful thing. If I would be in this situation I would put on a solar powered case in which would let my phone basically never die. I think phones will be the most useful because i would be able to contact people and make sure they are okay. My phone in this case could also be served as a radio to listen to any announcements that may help my family and I get out of a tough situation. I also have music and tons of pictures thst could give me something to do during the hours or days we would be either stranded or in trouble. If one of my family members had a phone with them I would not bring my phone. I would have to chose between one of my dogs which will be an awful situation if I were only to bring one "item".
ReplyDeletein a situation like this i personally doubt a phone would be as useful as you believe as it would run out of battery and it would be difficult to find a single in an area that's severely flooded. Although if you do manage to find a signal its not like authorities aren't already searching for you with rescue teams but you could make a call and then after that you can Instagram live it too. I'm just messing with you, a phone would be a useful tool in this scenario.
Deleteyeah I agree with matthieu that a phone in this situation is not the most important thing and there will be no battery and the data will be gone depending where your service company is from and unless you make one of the grain mill thing to spin and transform it into electricity or else your phone is goign to die but anyway great blog though.
Deleteso I am assuming this item can not be something that I don't have at the moment like a brief case full of cash for example, but also that things like cloths don't count either. A lot of people said that they would save their phone to contact emergency services but ill leave that to my parents, because, I have something that may prove useful in a situation like this. My doomsday prep bad would be the item that I will be taking as it contains survival essentials such as: rope, a flashlight, batteries, 3 days worth of food for my family and dog (these are canned foods like ravioli, soup, etc.), 2 books, (the hunt for red October and 1984), duck tape, gauze, sadly no antibiotics (working on it), a pocket knife, a life stick (hand held water purifier) and last but not least matches. I'm also working on getting a flare gun for my bag and because that would be awesome.
ReplyDeleteI believe this will be a common answer but if I was in this situation I would bring my phone. Your phone can prove very useful. I can be used to call family and authorities, it can act as a flashlight, It can also help your find a way out as well as tell you if there will be more flooding and storms or not. It is so useful in so many ways that it pretty much beats any other item you can bring.
ReplyDeleteI don't own a phone, and I do not see much of a use in owning one. However, your reason of saving your phone sounds reasonable.
DeleteGreat use of a phone! Just one thing to think about, its a flood. Your phone would almost certainly come into contact with water and then not be able to perform any of those tasks. Maybe reconsider its capability to perform the tasks you want it to perform in the given situation. Good blog though.
DeleteIf I had to grab one thing with me if I was I a situation of a flood, it would have to be my phone. Why? Well because my phone has a lot of memories that I can not loose, and calling especially since this is a case of emergency. My phone is something very important because it hold a lot of information that I wouldn’t want to forget. Photos and videos can also comfort me because I would be very sad in the case if a flood.and I understand people might disagree with this blog. I personally would also bring a portable charger.
ReplyDeleteI would also take my phone, It's a good item to take because if you need to call someone you can and a portable charger is beneficial well because if the phone dies you have a way to charge it. Great Blog
DeleteFirst of all, if there were a flood, it would be devastating and everything I had ever work for/at would be gone. But if it did end up happening and I had only had one thing to take with me, it would have to be my phone or laptop because I have all my picture saved on them and I would hate to lose them. I am also on them basically all the time.
ReplyDeleteIf my house was flooding I would probably bring my phone. It would be the most useful thing and it could get us out. I know a lot of other people said they'd bring their phone but it really is one of the best options. Things like pictures and memories are usually stored in the cloud and you can get access to them anywhere. With a phone I could phone for help and use the gps to tell emergency services where I was
ReplyDeleteIf I had to choose one thing to bring with me it would be my phone (assuming my dog got out already). I choose my phone because that has so many important things on it like work and pictures. I can access almost all my information including memories through my phone. I can also contact other people that I may miss or want to know if they're okay, etc.
ReplyDeleteIf my home was to flood, the object I would take with me is my my pet bird, Buddy. He is my household companion and I would hate to lose him to a natural catastrophe. In terms of objects, I would take my piano keyboard, so I can always have my music with me. If I were to have to take a job to help my family out, I can possibly play at restaurants or buildings where they would pay me to play.
ReplyDeleteI do not really have a lot of items that I believe would be worth risking my life to get while a flood is happening how ever I might get something like a laptop because they are expensive or my winter jacket because I most likely will get cold. Especially because I would be out side all day in cold weather and I might end getting stuck outside without shelter.
ReplyDeleteIf a flood happened in my home, the single item I would take is most probably my phone. I would take my phone because there are things on there like pictures and memories that cannot be re-created. Even though I could make new memories and take more pictures, there are just some things that I wouldn't want to disappear. I would also take my phone because if I had to contact someone I would be able to. Assuming that both of my dogs got out ok, the single item that I would take with me would be my phone.
ReplyDeleteI can relate to this. Great Blog
DeleteIf my house was flooded i would probably choose to take my phone. If you take your phone you have communitcation if nobody's around, you can probably pay for stuff with your phone and you would have entertainment so you wouldn't be bored. I also feel like my phone has a whole bunch of my memories on it like photos and losing all of my photos would be devastating.
ReplyDeletemakes sense Hales. We are all so attached to our technologies.
DeleteIf my house was flooded, I'd probably take my phone or anything that has memories on it. Also, you can communicate on your phone, look up the news and basically do everything. But my phone is always on me so it wouldn't be a problem trying to get it. So if I was in a rush I'd probably get my computer. Also, I would bring my dog with me but considering the fact that my dog is a living being he can walk out of the house by himself so it wouldn't be a problem getting him either.
ReplyDeleteThere are many things that I could bring from my home, everything I hold dear is in it. However, at the end of the day I think that the most important thing that I would bring from my home would be my photo album. My photo album contains all my memories since I was a baby and I wouldn't want to forget those. Of course I would be sad to leave everything else behind but I believe that my memories are more important above all.
ReplyDeleteaaawwwwww. I could never imagine ever having to leave all my belongings behind.
DeleteIf i can only bring one thing from my house it would be the family photo album.Although It is not worth much in money it has a lot of sentimental value. My family and I love looking through the old photos from the past years, so I can not imagine giving that up.
ReplyDeleteaw that’s sweettt
DeleteInto consideration the one item I would take with me is one of the photo albums we have. I am choosing this and not one of my own things because after a few minutes of trying to think up something dear to my heart I don't hold any material things of value close to me, every necessary thing would be recovered if ever needed and I know that memories are very important to my mother. So I chose that I would do something for her and save some of those memories from our childhood.
ReplyDeleteI have so many things in my home which hold so much sentimental value. There are so many photos albums in my house, mostly of travels, but there isn't really and album for the family. There are numerous family photos scattered throughout the house but not really an album dedicated to the family. Assuming my brother has already saved my dog, I would bring my backpack with me. I've had this back pack for as long as I can remember, its travelled the world with me. Assuming I just grab the bag not changing its contents, I'd also take whatever might be lying in this bag. Currently int the bag, I have, a book (Stephen King's "It"), a saxophone mouthpiece, my phone, $5.75, a pen, half a pencil, three days worth of history homework, a sweater, a calculator, the Canadian lifesaving manual and a lego "Darth Vader" keychain. These are all currently in (or on) my schoolbag (thats the backpack I am talking about) because I carry these things with me on a daily basis. If I was only allowed to bring the bag and not its components because the blog states one object only, I'd still bring the bag only. It would also be pretty convenient to keep things with me in case of an emergency. Not all the components are really that useful, example: half a pencil, not the most essential thing for a flood. This backpack means a lot to me and although I take it for granted sometimes as a normal backpack, it definitely holds a lot of memories of even everyday life.
ReplyDeleteIf I were in a situation where I only had the opportunity to take one item, I would most likely take my gokart because it provides me with transportation and a descent source of electricity because of the batteries. I could also hot wire the batteries to make a fire. So I could have power, transportation and a fire Wich are all very useful for survival. But I am not sure if the object I will save is meant for survival or just because I don't want to lose that specific item
ReplyDeleteGreat blog Ryan! That was a great choice.
DeleteIf my house were flooded and I could only take one item with me, I would take my laptop. Though it may be no use to during a flooding, it contains many of my saved photos and works. There are a lot of things stored on my laptop that I wouldn’t be able to replicate if they were lost, partly do to the fact that I always lose usb drives. If were to ignore the sentimental, however, I might take a flashlight with batteries. During flooding, power sources can be cut off, therefore leaving us without electricity. The flashlight can be used as a light source, and the batteries inside could also be used to start a fire if need be.
ReplyDeleteif i could only take one thing in my house it would probably be my puppy and my cat because i obviously would’ want them to die and also they both don’t know how to swim. obviously loosing all my pictures and memories would really be horrible but all your memories are in ur head and you don’t need materialistic things to remind yourself of them, even if sometimes it’s nice to look at old pictures and videos.
ReplyDeleteIf my house were flooded and I was only allowed to take on thing I'd take my laptop. My laptop has photos and videos from my childhood as well as memories from previous family vacations. I can't imagine losing all those precious moments. These photos aren't only important to me but also to my family meaning it would equally be as devastating for them as well.
ReplyDeleteIf I was only able to save one item from my house in a hurricane it would be my phone. The reason I would save my phone is because it has a lot of photos and memories of my family and I and these memories are very important to me. Another reason I would save my phone is because I use it everyday as entertainment and as a way to talk with my friends and family.
ReplyDeleteIf i was able to save one item it would be my family photo album. We have photos of all the generations of my family. That album is very important to me because it has tons of memories and it's a way to see and remember my relatives who have passed on. The album has around 5 generations of photos from my family so losing it would be like losing 5 generations worth of people who I care about.
ReplyDeleteIf my house where to be flooded I would probably grab my phone. I have a lot of things on my phone and I use it for so many things. Without it I wouldn’t be able to do a lot of my work. And plus when I’m bored I go on my phone. I’d probably grab my headphones too because I love to listen to music.
