There will only be ONE (1) blog this week! (No school Friday)

Some people believe that THE POLICE take advantage of their status.
They feel that THE POLICE are aggressive towards others because they are THE POLICE!

Should THE POLICE have to wear BODY CAMERAS on their uniform while on duty.

Explain.

  1. I think for sure that their are some police officers that take advantage of their status but in general I think that police just think that they are always right and that they are perhaps better than others. I have had close to no encounters with police but I think that they could just be in reality assertive as oppose to aggressive. In terms of wearing body cams I do not see why they should not wear them since their jobs revolve around having evidence of what occured.

    1. I find they are a waste of money, and are a little defective, considering an officer would find a way to get rid of the evidence.

    2. if you put a camera on a bad cop, the cop will be less bad. if you put a camera on a good cop, that cop stays in line. its math panagis. I'm with griff on this one.

  2. I would say their have been many cases where police overuse their power. While I understand that this is a problem, I don't really believe police need to where body cameras. If a police misuses his powers in public, trust me, people would simply take videos of it and it would be all over the internet in an instant. Pure evidence.
The only good use of a body camera is if the abuse happens privately, but then again, the police officer would just get rid of the evidence somehow.

    1. Those are good points, and it's true everyone has a phone, aka a camera on them at all times anyway, so if something were to go down, someone would probably catch it on tape anyway. Great blog!

    2. I completely agree with your points Panagis! People will simply take videos, it has happened before and it will continue to happen.

    3. I totally agree, there are totally police officers who overuse their power, but I think the videos should be public

  3. In the justice system we have in place today, it is very easy for things to come down to someones word against someone else word. I personally think that to get the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, we need to have something in place to show exactly what happened as far as police are concerned. I think that this will benefit the justice system in two ways mainly: first of all it will make it difficult for someone to flat out deny a crime they are being convicted for because there would be video evidence of the police apprehending the suspect and also any other things that may occur during that period like someone resisting arrest or even maybe attempting to dispose of illicit substances and claiming they aren't theirs. Second of all it would make it would be impossible for an officer to make false claims that someone reached for their weapon or something of the sort.

I think that implementing body cams to uniformed officers would help our society by equalizing the suspect and the officer, in the sense that anything they do will be recorded. This is something that I strongly believe will improve our justice system because a camera does not care if it had its morning cup of coffee. it will tell you exactly what happened weather the truth helps your case or not. Also if we are being honest, a justice system that relies on eye witness testimony is just plain ridicules.

    1. but at the same time I think that we should be the ones who record and not the officers

    2. why is that? it should not be the responsibility of the citizen to record and interaction with someone who is there to enforce. of course I'm not saying it isn't a good idea to record an interaction with the authorities if you are being falsely accused or you are being threatened, but still I'm curious as to your reasoning behind that statement. please elaborate.

  4. I think that there are definitely police out there that do take advantage of the fact hat they are police and the amount of authority that they have, but I also think that the majority of them are good and think of whats best foe you. I think that body cameras are a very good idea, to ensure that everyone is being fair and equal. The fact that they denied these because they "got in in the way:" just doesn't seem right to me. It actually seems pretty suspicious.

  5. Im sure there have been some instances of police officers abusing their powers but these are few and far between. We only see the bad officers which makes it seem like all police are like this but in truth a large majority are there to protect. They want to protect and serve and I feel that they should not be stereotyped like that. Now onto the topic of body cameras. If you have enough money to afford to buy thousands of cameras then go for it why not. I mean why give our officers pensions or increased wages or maybe even hire more officers to help out when we can get nanny cams instead. They are adults who have worked hard to get where they are and they should be treated as such. I just feel that that money could be used in other places rather than to treat our officers like children.

  6. I think that police officers abuse their power way to much but at the same time we also have rights, I can think of a number of times police did stupid things and thankfully I knew what they were doing was wrong and pointed it out to them. As a citizen you're allowed to record any encounters with police officers so as soon as a cop aproches you pull out your phone and start recording, it may help you later on, also know your rights! That being said I think that 12 should always have a camera on them recording everything, they cant turn off and that has a good mic, otherwise there's no point in having one if you could just turn it off. if police officers had this I know a few people who wouldn't have been arrested. there's always 2 sides to a story so why not have proof instead of word against word.

  7. I do honestly think that some police officers take advantage of their status , but to say all of them do is extreme personally I don’t see why they don’t want to give police officers mandatory cameras on their uniforms they could easily use tiny cameras no bigger than a grape so the excuse that “they get in the way” is a huge lie . They’re making it look like they’re hiding smt from the public and I honestly feel they should use cameras so if people are being injust in this line of work there should be punishments suitable for those crime like actions .

Personally, I do think police should be required to wear cameras just to insure they do their job correctly. Even then, having a camera on yourselve is like having someone watching over you and everyone of your moves without anybody actually being there. Just like the picture says up top, only bad cops and cops that aren't correctly doing their job are against having body cameras. I have never seen cops abusing their power but I have certainly seen and heard of many instances where they have been abusing their powers.

  9. my dad is a defense lawyer and he's told me that on several occasions, his clients admit to stealing a certain amount of money but in the report it says that they stole half of the amount of money that they actually did take. and obviously they don't say anything because that could mean more time so they usually just let the police get away with it. I don't think that cops should have to wear cameras, I think that we should just not hire corrupt cops. easier said than done tho.

  10. I do believe there are harsher police officers rather than the nice ones that let you off with a warning when it's your first time driving. I've seen videos of police officers harassing innocent black men, it could be fake but still, they didn't do anything to be treated this way. I don't see the point in wearing body cameras to be honest. The more aggressive police officers think they're high and mighty, I think we'd get along more with them if they were all nice and friendly.

  11. Personally, I do think that police officers should wear cameras on their uniforms for both their safety and the person they are going after's safety. It is also important for the videos to be public for everyone to see, so that if the police man/woman is being aggressive, the public can vote whether it was in good cause or not

    1. I agree, cops should be required to wear body cams. My initial train of thought was for the safety of their culprit, I didn’t even think about their own safety. More reason for then to be installed. Great blog!

    2. Good blog, but I happen to disagree though on the last part because the public is full of idiots who dont know what they are talking about which could reflect badly on the officer

  12. I find this situation very interesting and I understand why it is upsetting some people but personally It really does not bother me that the cops don't want to wear the cameras. I believe that they find it uncomfortable and I see why they think it doesn't make sense. Maybe My views will change when I am an adult and the aw applies to me more. But for now I believe that the law is just there for our protection and they are there to keep us safe and they are not against us.

  13. I think that police should wear body camera's. I saw a few articles online and I saw some reasons why the police didn't want them. Some said that they were going to be too bulky but I mean today camera's can be as small as a pea so I don't think that's a proper reason not to want them. I think that camera's can benefit the police in some ways. If they ever need to identify someone that they were trying to catch, they could look back at the video and maybe catch a glimpse of the persons face or their body. I've seen on the news police men and women be aggressive towards people for no reason and I personally think that this is the reason why the police don't want camera's. If they do something wrong the video would catch it and they could get into trouble. For me personally, wether they have these camera's or not doesn't really affect my life but I do think it would be a good idea for the police to be wearing camera's at all time.

  14. I feel like it is important police officers not all but some abuse their powers and just throw the person on the ground and stuff. I feel like the cases are always misidentification If you don't want to wear it prove that you can identify someone without jumping on the guy. They have to be here to protect us like jump on the guy if he is the one u wanted. But if not you got a person hurt wasted your time and might get sued or written a report.

  15. I most definitely think that cops should wear body cams while on duty especially in today’s society. More and more these days young officers on the job take advantage of their status and project a sense of entitlement to the public. By installing body cams on their uniforms victims of aggressivity by the cops have proof to back up their accusations and to boot cops will be influenced to behave and respect those in the community since It won’t be as easy to cover their tracts of misconduct.

  16. I don't think that police officers should be forced to wear body cameras while on duty because they are adults that had to go to school to get their job. I think that if we forced them wear body cameras less people would want to be police officers because they don't want someone watching their every move while on the job. I also think that if a police officer was about to do some thing bad, he would shut off his body camera before doing the harmful action.

    1. Then that would araise a lot of suspicion and they would get fired. A lot of dangerous people become police officers to abuse the power, so not hiring them would be a good thing. Only people trying to protect other citezens should be officers.

  17. Police abuse there power constantly, not only for things like using their sirens to skip traffic lights but they also cause a lot of brutality. I have had many encounters with cops and its sad how they think just because we are kids that they can try and make up diffrent laws that dont even exist. For example, I was with a group of friends at subway. We all bought things like cookies and drinks, the employs at subway ended up calling the police on us. Within a few minutes they arrived and assumed we were up to no good. Luckily my friends dad was a lawyer and he immediately put them in their place. They should wear cameras in these cases because some of the things THEY do are illegal.

  19. Yes. I completely think they do. But in some cases that doesn't stop them. The police officer will sometimes do bad things anyways. There was a case where an officer shot an unarmed man,who was lying on the floor complying with orders, and he had a body camera on. But of course, since it's a union, he never got charged. There was concrete video evidence but all the officer had to do was say "I thought he had a gun" and he walked away free. So yes, the cameras will solve a lot of problems, but not all of them. But the picture in this blog is completely correct. The only only officers who have a problem with cameras, are BAD OFFICERS.

  20. I think the police for sure take advantage of they’re status. They’re are some good cops and some bad ones. The good ones cooperate with civilians and try and do everything to make them feel safe and are always helping out. They’re are some who are just complete idiots I swear. For example a bad cop can literally say “did you reach for my gun” and even if u didn’t they have the right to take you down. If they feel threatened they can take you down. People who are just at the wrong place at the wrong time get shit on by bad cops because they think they’re superior.

  21. Police definitely abuse their power from time to time. But other times, most of the time (hopefully), they use their power to serve and provide justice, ensuring everyone is safe. I think they should wear body cameras because it provides evidence and will only show the truth. It can be backing up the the victim to prove their innocence or backing up the cop to prove that they are guilty. Either way, they provide concrete evidence.

yes, the police need these body cameras because I have heard of countless stories of police being sent to court because of an accusation but they are later released because they have no evidence whether they are actually the culprit or not. There is no disadvantage to this because the cameras are very small so they would not add much weight. this would also stop a lot of police crimes like the shootings of innocent people and other violent crimes against citizens.

  23. There are definitely police officers that take advantage if their status, but there are also many officers that respect people and the law, and use their position to do good. Unfortunately, we only ever hear about the bad seeds. I think that the police should have to wear body camera while on duty. There are so many cases where the it’s simply a matter of he said she said, and there is no real proof that someone might be innocent or that an infraction was made. These cameras could help a lot making sure that there is actual record of a wrong doing, either on the part of the officer or a civilian. What’s the problem if you have nothing to hide? There are concerns that the cameras are too bulky and expensive, but with today’s technology, cameras can get to be the size of a pea, and clearly they could afford the equipment seeing as how they did test runs.

  24. I feel like a lot of police officers take advantage of their status because since they are in relation to the government, technically they are also the government, meaning that even if they don't stop at a red light they won't get in trouble. It's kind of like a hierarchy where the government and judges are at the top and police are at the bottom. I definitely think that police officers should wear cameras on them because a lot of cops are racist, especially in the US. The camera will prove who is innocent and who is guilty.

  25. Karishma,
The police’s role is to make our community feel safe and protected. It has been caught some times that the police have done wrong things. Shot the wrong people and killed the wrong people so I believe that putting these cameras will help solve these issues and serve justice to the victims. Don’t get me wrong police are very good people and they are needed in our lives but we need to make sure that they are not too aggressive at times because it has happened before.

  26. I believe that it is peoples rights for police to need body cameras. Do people know how many police get accused of things but never get charged. The only thing the judge can rely on is peoples word. And the police is the one in authority. What the body cameras will do is make sure that the police are always being watches. So that they don't take advantage of their authority.

  27. I think that police should wear body cameras to help proove their word in court or something like that. It could help document everything and really be a great tool in the courthouse as well. I don't think police take advantage of their power and I think they are just judged to harshly because of a few bad ones in the states. I hate it when there is like one racist cop in america and then everybody in north america thinks all cops are racist and I think that is a load of bs. People are just stupid and need to open their eyes up. In reality, most cops are just nice people who are here to make sure people don't kill each other and tear all the houses down. They are hear to make our community safe and maybe body cameras will help prove that police are not as bad as you think they are or vice versa.

  28. I think that they should have cameras on cops so that people could tune in to see what exactly the cops are doing in high or low pressure situations and see if they think that they are handling the situations properly. Also it would help to see which cop are mishandling the situation and if they are going to far.
